We keep the Inspector inside so we can light it easier for you to be able to see 24/7. There is no need to have it outside or face it into the wind. The kind of radiation we?re looking for at first with fallout that may travel across the Pacific Ocean to Southern California is gamma radiation. Gamma travels great distances and goes through just about anything, including you and me. Lead will stop it. In fallout, one the primary radionuclides of concern is iodine-131 which emits a lot of gamma radiation but is a beta emitter as well. If we left the Inspector outside and fallout begins to come down, the beta emitting I-131 could contaminate the instrument. They've been courting in the box during the evening. The Box-builder/owner is originally from Mel(bourne), Downunder (+U.S proud citizen), hence the Aussie names chosen for these owls. The relatively warm winter weather in San Diego County seems to have brought them into the box early to investigate it for nesting potential - we shall see. The box has been up since mid-November and owls moved in two weeks later! At this rate we might have a clutch in January and owlets in February - check back often - CAMs will be broadcasting the action. Box is located about 16 feet above ground level. Dimensions - Length 30", Height 18", Width 16" (left-to-right dimension seen on interior camera), Porthole 6" diam. (and about 6" above box floor)
